Target Audience.

Like most spy-thrillers we are going to target our movie around 15-50 year old's.

The reason behind the age range is that we cannot present a movie that will contain offensive language, explosions, death, blood and maybe drug use to anyone under the age of 15. As it would be immoral to show them it as it may scare them or scar them. And the reason behind the top age limit, some elderly people may not like action violence as it may startle them, older people may want to watch a romance movie or drama as it may be more suiting for them.

The reason for the gender is that there will be explosions and men seem to enjoy action movies more than women i'm not saying that for all women but its just known.

Genre conventions we must abide by! but probably won't

White middle class males as the star of the story: such as James Bond, Jason Bourne, and many more.

The damsel in distress normally featured in James Bond.

Foreign villains again James Bond and Bourne.

Things that blow up.

And last but not least some mystery.
All these aspects make up a genre convention for Spy-Thrillers.

Shooting Day, and its cold!

Its not what your thinking Justin Timberlake wasn't a costume but a suit was it was worn by our 2 spies

Evaluation Question 1

I feel the title of our film is a good place to start. The title 'Reine Des Coeurs' is french for queen of hearts. We found this to be suiting as the movie will take on a french style and theme, most likely going to take place in France. The choice behind the name was the fact that the female villain left behind a playing card with the queen of hearts on it. also if the name is in french then it keeps the viewer confused about the going on of the film, this will start the viewers questioning about the movie before even the 1st advert has come on in the cinema. The name breaks genre convention in my opinion, as most names are the name of the main character 'James Bond', 'Bourne', 'Salt' to name a few and this isn't English its very rare you see a movie with a different language name.

This scene is a panning shot of the main area. It is used to show the viewer the area in which the scene takes place. We needed to do this as its not only a genre convention to set the scene but a movie convention. You will probably not find a movie in the world where it doesn't set the scene at least once. The point of setting the scene is to show the audience where the next clip of action is going to take place and its used to make the viewer feel welcomed into that environment with the characters. We believed this would be a good place to shoot our scene for two reasons, easily accessible from school so if we need to do two days worth of work then we were able to. Also the grassy area surrounded completely with buildings gives that kind of safe guard feel, that when one of the characters leaves he will die. All in all no Genre conventions were challenged.

The queen of hearts, the reason behind the title of our movie. This is a calling card for the main female villain. Most killers have a certain calling card. Such as in 'Saw' the killer cuts out a piece of jigsaw out of his victims to show that he is missing something. This shows that the card could mean something about her kills and why she is trying to obtain the case. This is used to show mystery of who this woman is and why she wants the case and why she leaves the card behind, is it just to show who finds the body who she is or is there a deeper meaning behind it such as her father killed her mother with a playing card and now shes messed up (random i know but it could happen)

This is another setting the scene shot, this time of a suburban road in the Bristol area. We had no money to make an action packed opening. so we wanted to keep it simple. This is the scene before the getting ready scene in the bedroom. Its setting the location and scene. The next scene is an indirect warning to the spy that danger lies ahead.
DEATH SCENE!!! This is the scene just after the over exaggerated gun shot sound. it shows the spy lying dead on the floor, and the legs of the queen of hearts who' head is also not seen in order to keep mystery of who she is. it will keep the audience guessing through out the movie until it is revealed who she is. The whole movie we want to keep mystery and suspense. To follow the convention of spy-thrillers we want a twist ending at the end obviously. like the queen of hearts turns out to be the main characters mum or something, we haven't looked into it to much. We feel the element of not showing the faces will worry people about the queens return and why she does what she did.

Over head shot used to show that even though the characters believe they know what they are doing that they are still vulnerable and only human and are able to die like everyone else. This still shows spy 1 moving out of shot away from the bench where the case is exchanged hands and that spy 2 is picking it up to see the content of the case. When we show spy 2 looking at whats in the case we don't show whats in the case, this too keeps the element of mystery under genre convention about whats in the case. This scene shows the viewers for the 1st time that they are spies using code words to transfer brief cases seems pretty spy like to me. This is the 1st instant that we know what genre the movie is going to be, if we went in not know anything.

Murder scene, yes some action entertaining  this is the scene where we watch beloved spy 2 kick the bucket, we don't know why hes dying we don't know who pulls the trigger we don't know anything really other than that he dies. this brings in the major mystery that will go throughout the movie and will keep the viewers hopefully on the edge of their seat. The death of dear spy 2 wasn't going to be through a major explosion or car crash, just your bog standard ally murder pretty boring, but don't worry action will come later. This death is meant to be low key so viewers don't get distracted by the pretty explosions and focus more on the unfolding of the story so they can focus on whats going on and when they grasp the who story add the cool stuff later

Scene from movie where spy 1 gets ready in his bedroom, he has a fireplace so we must be able to assume he must come of some money as low budget houses don't tend to have fancy fireplaces. Behind him is a radio which is emitting a broadcast about a fellow spies death and it shows the spy and the audience that there is danger ahead of him but he is persistent to carry on and not worry about it. This is the 1st scene where we can see a human but no head. this keeps the mystery on who he is and why we cant see his head. he must come in later in the movie after about 1 hour or so but his name may be spoken a few times before.

Overall we didn't break many conventions, we kept the protagonist two white middle class males that look pretty strong who will probably follow genre convention to beat up men and save women. The only convention we seemed to create was the slow opening. If you watch movies such as 'Salt', 'James Bond' and 'Bourne' the opening is mainly action packed with guns and explosions, while we did have a gun it wasn't used in a overly action packed style way. the opening is meant as a story setter.

Evaluation Question 5

Genre convention
Atmosphere:We wanted to create a mystery atmosphere, we feel we did this correctly with the lac of faces seen. we wanted to follow up the genre convention of a suspenseful atmosphere. to entice people to watch our movie. We hope that this will attract the audience into viewing all of it. With the handheld camera shot it will hopefully make them feel as they are part of the movie, and what happens will effect them, its hard to do that from the beginning as people only care when they build a re pour with a character.

Character:With our genre convention we decided to not show the faces of our characters, this will keep suspense over who they are. We used them for a suspense filled mood. we also kept genre convention by making them white males who are middle class. This follows gene convention. I believed that if maybe some things under genre convention then people may watch it as society seems to complain about change all the time and seems to like the same old stuff again.

Music and sound.
For music everything we used had to be non-copy write, under law. Our music is similar to that of 'James Bond' this is good as our target audience are fans of that series. there is very little diagetic sound, the only really sound is on the radio broadcast and the gun shot, this was used to create tension.

Cinematography
To set the scene of queens square we used a panning shot. This is let the audience know what kind of area the action will be taking place in. This allows the audience feel like they are part of the shot and almost feel there watching in real life. This will hopefully attract the audience into watching our movie as we want them to feel part of the ride the characters are going to take. We also used an overhead shot to show the people that even though the characters seem to know what they are doing that they are still vulnerable and able to be killed .

Mise-en-Scene
Costume:We used a suit and tie combination to show that the characters are above class, that they have formal wearing jobs and probably earn above the average pay.
Props:The only props we had were a brief case and a gun used to shoot one of the spies. The queen of hearts is another prop its used as a calling card by the woman, we hope that this will entice people to keep watching to find out who she is and whats in the case.
Setting:Queens square, main reason close to school but the underground reason is the building cage in a grassy area it shows that there is no hope for one of the spies who's about to walk out of the grassy area into the dark ally of death.
Lighting:The area where the two spies swapped cases is well lite but when one leaves its dark this represents danger, as that's the place he died we felt this sitting to the situation.

Editing
We used a lot of fades in and out, this represents mystery of the scene and that its not just simple to cut out of it. Also the text colour that we edited in is blood red and black, this shows that the movie could be quite dark and that the happy colours aren't here. Also we edited it into black and white. While we aren't going to keep this throughout the whole movie we found it suiting to show that this is a dark movie throughout.

Unique selling point.
The main USP of the opening is that we don't show the faces of the two characters. This leaves open the element of mystery and makes the movie seem like it could have a few good twists that make you go 'ohhh' or just gaze in awww. We hope this will make people want to see our movie.

Evaluation Question 4

Using the surveymonkey questionnaire at the top of my blog i was able to obtain answers that will help me see who is going to watch our movie. 16-25 seems to be the main age range for the people who like
spy-thrillers, which came out on top of favourite sub-genre.
To the left and right of this text are two questionnaire we used these to help us decipher a target audience for our film. We came out with young male 16-30

 Meet Brian
Brian is an ideal target audience member.
Brian is 21 years of age and is into Indie rock, he stays away from mainstream music but has a few guilty pleasures in the pop world. Brian shops in TK maxx and is a sucker for a bargain. Brian enjoys popular comedy TV shows such as 'FRIENDS' and 'Two and a half Men' But does enjoy other shows such as 'Top Gear' and 'Mock the Week'
Brian is a fan of the 'James Bond' series and is always looking for new films such as those ones to watch. Hes also a fan of comedy's and sci-fis. Brian shops in such shops as Top-Man and NEXT he is a fan of branded clothes but will purchase an unbranded shirt if its good. Brian is a uni student and works in a retail shop.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, Brian doesn't exist. I made him up as he represents our target audience.

Once filming of our movie opening I asked a few people some questions after letting them watch it: these were the questions
1.Would you continue watching the film after seeing the opening?
2.What was your favourite part of the opening? and why?
3.What was your least favourite moment?
4.What could we improve on?
5.What did we do well?

These were their responses.
Person 1:James M

Me:Would you continue watching the film after seeing the opening?
James M: Yes i feel that the story could really pick up.

Me:What was your favourite part of the opening? and why?
James M: I enjoyed the death scene of the spy at the end because the black screen and then the gun shot took me by surprise and left the question of was it her who shot him or did she have a sniping helper.

Me:.What was your least favourite moment?
James M:The getting dressed part at the start, it may have been a story setter but it was slow and low on action.

Me:What could we improve on?
James M:Im put off by the name to be honest.

Me:What did we do well?
James M:I liked that you couldn't see their faces, kept the felling of mystery the whole time.

Person 2:Ellen F

Me:Would you continue watching the film after seeing the opening?
Ellen F:No as its not my type of movie

Me:What was your favourite part of the opening? and why?
Ellen F:I enjoyed the bench scene particularly the camera shot above their heads looking down on them.

Me:What was your least favourite moment?
Ellen F:The death scene, no particular reason just didn't work for me.

Me:What could we improve on?
Ellen F:The name.

Me:What did we do well?
Ellen F:The fact you couldn't see their faces really worked for me, kept it in mystery.

Person 3:Max P

Me:Would you continue watching the film after seeing the opening?
Max P:Yes

Me:What was your favourite part of the opening? and why?
Max P: The house scene was my favourite especially with the radio broadcast in the background.

Me:What was your least favourite part?
Max P:The bench scene, i know it was a story setter but it wasn't that exciting there are many other ways he could obtain the briefcase.

Me:What could we improve on?
Max P:The name will put people off as its not English people may be put of by it.

Me:What did we do well?
Max P:The fact you couldn't see their faces kept mystery.

Evaluation Question 2

The media represents allot of social groups in race, gender, age and other factors this is used to show certain types of people in society. Such as an old person 65+ is usually shown as a golf fan, whisky drinker and a 'chav' is normally represented as a lower class person who lives in a council estate.
This movie is based around the portrayal of middle class white people as the two main characters at the start are both white and male. The first spy is clearly middle class as he is shown to be getting ready in a middle class style house. This links in with most spy thrillers as the main character is normally a white male in such movies such as the 'Bourne' series and 'James Bond' who is another middle class white male. these aren't the only two movies with a white male as the star, it seems to be a genre convention for spy thrillers. The woman in most spy thrillers are normally seen as the weaker more inferior to males. Its normally James Bond who has go to save the female before saving the world. They follow that whole damsel in distress situation that most movie is going for, but we filliped that on its head as the killer at the end of our film is female killing a male person. This shows that there are a few exceptions in society and that not everyone is how they are portrayed in the media. Such as the movie salt where Angelina Jolie is the hero, she is female. Or that you never see Will Smith play a bad guy and that he too is always the hero. this shows that most people live up to genre convention but there are always exceptions in society.

This is a photo of one of our actors (you cant see his face to create a certain mystery) and next to it is a photo of James Bond'. I felt that his character would be most suiting as they are both British, white and avid suit wearers. They both represent the middle class white male man.
Their appearance is mainly the same, suit and tie fancy formal wear. Bond and our spy both are relied on by the government, In order to protect and save the country they love and they both fight for the queen. Both characters could represent safety as when they are around the bad guys normally lose a get killed. or that means they could represent victory as they never lose.
The differences between the two characters is that James Bond is a rule breaker and does things his own way which gets results where as our characters play by the rules at the beginning, that just leads to one of them being dead.
We chose our characters as they not only follow convention of stereotypical white males but they create messages and meaning. They fit well with the genre convention and they display patriotism and honor towards the country they love. That gives morals and meaning to the character.

Evaluation question 7

While doing the preliminary task I learn't that continuity is one of the most important aspect of a film. If the all other aspects of the film are right but the continuity isn't, no one watching will take what we made seriously as the camera and the shot types will be all out. If there is constant mistakes, where pieces of clothing disappear then reappear or objects change hand, the audience will be focusing on that and not the plot of the film.
It wasn't easy to keep continuity, we had to keep worrying about what went where and if when a character picked up an object that when we moved the camera he kept it in the same hand. The worst aspect was the weather. As most of our film was outside, we had to re-shoot a whole two scenes as the weather that day was different.
The picture next to this text shows a brief understanding of the 180 degree rule, the red side represents a place where the camera cannot go as to keep the characters on the same side in the final product and the green side shows where the camera can go in order to keep the characters on the same side of shot. we reviewed this in our continuity exercise.
This is the final cut of our preliminary task.
And yes i knows its poor quality.
The video focuses on the 180 degree rule and that when the paper is thrown that it didn't change hand at all
We focused on continuity as this task would help us learn it for our main presentation.

Shot types
This exercise taught me and my group all about shot types and how they can be used as a representation of each character, for example say if the camera was looking up on them that would represent them in a higher power and as important such as a king the camera would normally look up on them as they are of importance. Another shot type that this exercise taught us was the shot-reverse shot. The task showed us the importance of it to be shown in a conversation so you can see the characters faces and maybe link it to what they are saying.

Editing
This exercise also taught me and my group the importance behind editing. As we need to get it all in time otherwise the dialogue and visuals will not match up. The editing process also taught us about the software known as iMovie, a program in which i have never used before. It showed me how to go around using
iMovie and how to use the basic controls of it for when it comes to the time we edit our really presentation.

Camera Movements
This task also taught me about camera movements. How to move a camera in such a way that it shows both characters talking to each other without breaking the 180 degree rule. It was difficult at 1st but that's to the task we learnt how to do it and knew what we needed to know for the final task. The same applies for match on action.

Techniques
The continuity exercise showed me that it is a better idea to have two or three cameras running at the same time shooting at different positions instead of just having one and filming it three times from different angles or just stopping and starting and it would help increase the chances of complete continuity and give the film more sense of realism. The whole part of a thriller is to try and make it more realistic so people will take it seriously and make it look more professional.

Evaluation Question 6

The Apple Mac Pro, this machine only came into use with use after the filming stage, we used this mainly for the software that was on it, iMovie 11. We used this to edit our movie into the movie it now is. Some parts of the software was difficult and hard to use but most of it was easy and straight forward. We used Google to help us understand most of the software and basic general knowledge.

A camcorder, we used these to film our movie opening. without this none of this would be possible. The problem with this is the battery life and the fact that its storage wasn't great so we had a limitation on how much we could film and how many times we could mess up before having to wipe it at a PC. We overcame this by being talented and doing it correctly quickly.

we used the tripod to steady the camcorder and hold it in position to make sure our shots we focused. No real problems arose from the  tripod, it worked as a tripod should which was good.

I used a camera to take photos from the shot and upload them to my blog later. The camera had the same problem as the camcorder as the battery life wasn't superb but over came it by getting the work done.

While i did use many physical technologies, i have used a few online website and offline software's. Youtube was a major website that i used in order to analyse other movie and gain ideas through that to put into my movie or base mine around. IMDB was another major website of use as it allowed me to look up movies of similar genre and base mine around it again. Blogger is another iv been using it to reach you guys and inform you of all that's been going on in our movie production.
This task has taught me a bit more about technology than i already knew, mainly about iMovie, as i went into this task knowing nothing about it and coming out on the other end knowing how to move scenes in order and make them into a movie style clip, there is admittedly more i could learn such as soundtracks and SFX but i have grasped the basics behind it. the rest of the tech we used i have already used in the past and was fully aware of how to work it.

Evaluation Question 3

The Media forms a massive part of our everyday lives. As Audiences, our days normaly consist of reading, listening and watching a form of Media, eg. Talking about what happened last night on a reality tv show we watch. In this way the Media can be said to be part of the social convention of everyday life, and has become an institution, like the Family or the State.
Popular Media institutions include BBC, The UK film council, Vertigo Films & Film Four.
These are the four major film institutions based in the uk, and one of these four companies are the most likely to fund and distrubute our film. Vertigo films is the most likely institution that will take our film as it is most relatable to the genre of movie that our group has chosen. it seems like the company that will most likely back us on our idea.
The company least likely to fund our movie is the BBC, as its main approach is more independant dramas such as 'Billy Elliot' and 'The First Grader' which in no way are like ours. The other two just never seemed to be a factor of option to us.
Vertigo Films have distributed movies such as the sweeny and that movie is a similar type to ours, About a cop who seeks revenge and the comapny also go for bigger budget productions over smaller arthouse style movies which is what we want to do.
Paul Greengrass is a liable candidate to direct our movie, as he has done a great job with the 'Bourne Ultimatum' and that is the style of movie that we want to do. That sort of Sub-Genre spy thriller that he captured very well in the 'Bourne Ultimatum'. As well as Doug Liman as he directed the 'Bourne Identity' which was also a succefull and action-packed movie.
Moving away from the 'Bourne' series another plausable candidate is Thomas Alfredson who directed the superb 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' which brought Gary Oldman to win an oscar for best actor. The budget estimnation of our movie will be £10,000,000, this will be to market the movie on such places such as billboards and to use intuitive product placement and air a TV advert during relevent shows that people who watch them will want to see our movie, such as whitehall and other detective shows. this will also be to produce the movie and to pay the production company. The production company who we have chose to work with is 'Working Title' as they have the backing of universal studios untill 2015 they are a perfect candidate as the have produced films like the ones that we are filming such as 'Atonement' which was a good movie.
I have already briefly explained the advertising campaign of our movie, but we also need to focus on interview with cast members on primetime TV shows such as 'Alan Carr: Chatty Man' and other popular viewed shows, its all about getting the word around about our movie and showing people little snipits to entise them to come watch. While we shall feature adverts on popular social networking site such as Facebook, Youtube and Twitter we also need to try and reach people who arent advid users of them. We can achieve this by putting up posters on billboards and using TV advertisement to stratigically place adverts during shows similar to those of the movie to hopefully get audiances who will watch our movie. we would do all this through Vertigo films as they would be the ones backing us and supporting us as they would get profit at the end.

Stroyboards

Editing

To edit our film we used apples editing software iMovie '11, this is the most up to date version of their editing software
This is a still taken from the editing software we used (obviously not our movie), i admit that i didn't do a great deal of editing, but i did have a go. In order to start editing we had to change the file type of our clips from the camera using a file converter online. We found iMovie to be fussy when i came to certain file types pulled from a camera. which is unhelpful for editing software, But from my experience i found it to be more of a drag and drop kind of ordeal, the controls from the software were easy to follow and use. I found some parts confusing such as entering sound clips and titles, i left that part to the person in our group who was used to that software as he could do it, i'm more of a windows movie maker type of person personally

The Last Suduction (Opening)

Click here for The Last Suduction (opening). (I analyed up to 4:18)
I have been analysing the opening of this movie for our film as it is of the same type of genre of our film. In The opening you can see the two characters that the story will focus around. You can see the woman (Name not yet know) in her place of work, she seems to be a manager of some sort of telemarketing company. She acts around the workers as a mean and controlling boss, this shows how her character truely to the audiance as alot can be said about her in the first two minutes. Her choice of words are pretty harsh, towards her team. It shows that she will only reward people for truely excellent work, This is shown when she offers $100 to the next person who makes a triple sale, but when one person makes a triple sale she exclaims that it had to be within a fifty second time period. But eventually her method pays off when an employe makes a triple sale she does give him the $100, however she does tempt him with some valuable coins that she mentions could be worth $1000, the man refuses the coins and takes the $100. This can present the fact that she could be a con artist trying to trick people out of money, and that she could be quite skilled at it (which is portrayed later in the film).
The opening scene also focuses on a male character also, A perscription drug dealer (whos name is also not known yet) The possesion of perscribtion cannabis suggests either one of two things, That he either stole them or he himself is a doctor however it is not known yet how he obtained them, however it is know that he is selling them for money on the black market, When the two purchasers play a prank on the seller they do not let him have the money staright away instead they hold a gun to his head as he has a strong over whealming feeling of assured death. In the time he believes hes going to die he only blames himself and not the two guys who are going to shoot him. The only request he has (instead of pleaing for his life) is for the to get it over and done with quickly, This can show that this character has no real feeling that his life is worth anything. The fact that all he wants is for them to be getting it over and done with, (If that was me i would be pleaing for my life or even curled up in a ball crying for them to not, but thats just me) instead he is calm and ready, almost like he pre-planned this.
The opening scene also sets the scene, (urban new york to anyone that didnt know) Its only one extended shot which starts with a taxi beaping its horn on a not so bust street and then pans up to reveal the whole of manhatten (Concrete jungle)

An 18 is restricted for people 18+ so is strictly for adults, it has more freedom than 15,s. It can show strong blood and gore, strong language or very strong language, very strong violence and scenes of real sex.

The Aim Of A Thriller

The aim of any type of thriller is to try and keep the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the movie. In any thriller or even sub-genre thriller movie such as a spy thriller or a horror thriller has the aim to keep a viewer on the edge of the seat using either a compelling storyline in such movies as orphan or seven psychopaths but the fact they kept viewers on the edge of their seats is open to interpretation. Not everyone is the same in the scene that different people like different things and that makes it hard for people to create a movie that is liked by everyone. But there are some movie that become a cult classic such as dirty harry starring Clint Eastwood.

The Movies That Inspired Our 2 Minute Film Presentation

The Plot

The scene starts out with an image of spys house on a busy road, where the shot zooms into a particular house, it then cuts into a scene with a spy getting ready, while not revealing his head to givet hat element of mystery. The scene shows him putting on a suit and getting ready to go out with a certain breifcase that is placed in his wardrobe. while this is gong on we have a second spy also packing a breifcase again not revealing his head to also give that element of mystery. the scene cuts when we see the first spy leaving his house walking down stairs only revealing that he has taken the breifcase and what he is wearing.
The next scene is of the first spy waling through a park to sit on a park bench next to another suitted up guy, again not showing the faces of the two men. Both men exchange one word which will be used as a code word for them to know they are at the right place. Both men then stand up and instead of taking their original breifcase they take each others case.
The first spy shown from the first dressing scene is then shown walking away, passing a woman, she subtley slips a knife into his chest and takes his breifcase using the other and then she continues waling the direction she was initially walking. The camera then shows the first spy lying on the ground with blood on his chest, the camera then zooms into his pocket showing a queen of hearts playing card sticking out of it, this card keeps the mystery of who this woman is and why she wants the breifcase.

Movie Genre
